Fair of the Book and Arts of Mazatlan 2010

From March 12 to 21, 2010
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico

Writer Juan Villoro considered it “the only fair of the book in the world that happens at a human scale”. It’s been equally growing with the enthusiasm generated to the people, with over 250 activities.

Created in 1997 and originally known as “Journeys for Reading UAS 97”, this fair started as weekly presentations of editorial companies such as Planeta, Alfaguara, Fondo de Cultura Económica and Plaza & James, and authors such as Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Guillermo Murray Prisant, Juan Villoro, Alberto Ruy Sánchez, Francisco Hinojosa, Elena Poniatowska and Jaime Labastida. No doubt it is the most important local effort to promote reading and the most dynamic cultural event with most participation in the state of Sinaloa.

Writer Juan Villoro considered it “the only fair of the book in the world that happens at a human scale”. It’s been equally growing with the enthusiasm generated to the people, with over 250 activities.

Every year converge prestigious Spanish speaking Mexican and international authors.

The fair is open to the general public. The workshops for kids are managed by world recognized and skilled specialists, most of them with experience from the famous International Fair of the Book of Guadalajara. The shows for kids are carefully selected in order to stimulate their habit for literature and all artistic activities.

Also, some authors personally present their books in this fair.

The headquarters is Machado Square, considered the heart of the Historic Center. Stands, a couple of stages, a picture exhibition and a module for workshops for kids are set in this location. An exhibition of well recognized authors is installed at the Angela Peralta Gallery. Other locations are also used in this fair, such as Theater Angela Peralta, schools, the State University, Olas Altas drive and La Gran Plaza Mall.

There are at least twenty activities per day, including workshops, courses, painting exhibitions, conferences, musical performances and presentation of books; and most of them are free.

The evening shows have featured groups and artists such as Sherele, Barrio Zumba, Casino Slut Bar, Tito Losada, the Sinaloa Folkloric Ballet, and Los Gatos group, among others.
